My literature teacher doesn’t give us notes. What should I do?

My teachers didn’t give us notes. Nor did my university professors. Literature isn’t about rote learning. Once you master the skills, you can analyse any text easily.

So what should literature students do and how do we study?

  1. Learn how to do your own research. Sparknotes and Lit Charts are great websites to help with your understanding of the texts. They even have full translations for Shakespearean texts! That said, it does not replace your having to analyse the texts on your own because the notes might not be applicable to the questions asked in your papers. Most importantly, do not plagiarise and pass off the ideas as your own.
  2. Make use of lit resources to help you decipher meanings and analyse texts.
  3. Learn how to write effectives notes using these free Notion templates.
  4. Ask questions in class, go for consultations to check if your points are valid.
  5. Struggling to identify the techniques? Focus more on analysing the themes.
  6. Practise writing and get feedback.

True learning occurs when you articulate ideas in your own words.
